I am a new employee and Radio Shack, any pointers?
I am 18 and just recently got a job at Radio Shack.
I have only worked for 2 days and already I am freaking out a little since I have no clue what most of the people that come in are talking about.
The majority of our customers ask for cables and batteries. I can handle the batteries most of the time but the cables are a whole different story.
Does anyone have any pointers/tips they could share with me?
Ask your manager if there are any training or self-training materials available to help you learn stuff.
You can also do what I did when I worked at Radio Shack a long time ago, take a catalog home and start quizzing yourself on the stuff. If you’re at least as good as the catalog, that will handle most situations. If the catalog isn’t detailed enough, go to the Radio Shack web site to get more info. Be prepared to be disappointed though, the web site sucks at this. Someone didn’t do a thorough enough job there.
Cables are in the realm of electronics. You might get a book on electronics and read through it, maybe even tinker with some electronic projects. Radio Shack has a few books on that (use your employee discount). That’s not a bad hobby. They may not tell you explicitly about certain products, but you’ll learn more about cables (and the other electronics) in general that will teach you more than what the catalog will. This will help you in situations like, “Well, this one will work here, but with what you’re wanting to do, you’d be better off with that one because….”
I was into Amateur Radio back when I was your age. I learned a huge amount about electronics from Amateur Radio books, especially the Amateur radio handbook. I learned hardly squat from Radio Shack on that topic.
Don’t worry. Everyone is overwhelmed by a new job for the first week. You sound like someone who wants to do a good job. You’ll do fine. It’s the guys that don’t care about trying to do a better job who won’t do well.
