Broadband usage question?
I was somewhat surprised to learn recently what exactly constitutes broadband usage.
My provider it BT, and I have a 10GB usage allowance. I frequently run close to that each month but I do very little downloading.
According to BT, the following activities use the following amounts:
Sending an email 4KB
Streaming 30 minutes of audio (at 128kb/s) 29MB
Streaming 30 minutes of SD video (at 800kbs) 175MB
Downloading uploading a digital photo 1MB
Downloading uploading a music track 4MB
Downloading uploading a SD film 700MB
Downloading uploading a HD film 4GB
Now shortly I will be purchasing a wifi internet Radio, which will be wirelessly connected to my bt home hub and will be used to stream radio stations from across the world.
Will that constitute broadband usage? If so, I am concerned that I will easily go over my 10gb allowance.

Internet radio will be almost the same bandwidth as “music tracks”. So, for example, if a MP3 with 4 minutes of music is 4MB, then the radio equivalent would be 1MB/minute while listening.
Now, how long do you plan to listen per day? At 1MB per minute, is about 720MB per day if on 12 hours. At that rate, you will hit 10GB in about 12 days, just from internet radio alone…
To be frank, a 10GB download limit is not meant for major streaming or downloads, it is intended for web browsing and emails primarily…
The example given above, 30 minutes of audio = 29MB, is about the same as my guess… If you are close to hitting the 10GB limit, do not use Internet radio – you are guaranteed to go over with that running as well….
